Redact a PDF without uploading your document

Manually cover sensitive PDF areas in black and export a new PDF. Free, local browser processing without an account.

Open editor

Draw a rectangle or ellipse over an area and use fully opaque coverage. Add multiple independent regions, then move, rotate and resize each one.

How it works

  1. Choose a PDF and open the page you need.

  2. Mark sensitive areas with fully opaque black coverage.

  3. Export all pages or a selection as a new PDF, then inspect the result.

Exported pages are rasterized. The original text layer is not included. A black region in the editor does not replace checking the downloaded file.

Tools

What happens to your files

Selected files and edits are not uploaded to a Schutzo server. A temporary local draft in your browser supports recovery in the same tab. It expires after ten minutes of inactivity. If the browser is closed, an expired draft is removed the next time the app opens. Language and theme preferences are stored separately.

Capabilities and limitations

PDF.js loads from an external CDN. Requests for application code may therefore leave your device; your selected documents are not uploaded with them. Maximum 200 MB per file and 200 pages per workspace. Images: up to 40 megapixels and 16,384 pixels per side; up to 80 megapixels in total.

PDF exports contain newly rasterized pages. The original text layer, searchability and PDF structure are not preserved. Blur and pixelation do not guarantee irreversible anonymization. Use fully opaque black coverage for sensitive content and check the exported file.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. You can use Schutzo without signing up.

Are my documents uploaded?

Document processing and export run in your browser. Your documents are not sent to our server for editing.

What happens after a refresh?

The last saved local draft can be recovered in the same restored tab if ten minutes of inactivity have not elapsed. A sudden crash may lose the most recent changes.

Are faces detected automatically?

No. You select the areas manually using a rectangle or ellipse.
